Why did I write this book?

I wrote this book for women who feel now the way I felt back then: sad, frustrated, lonely in their relationship, exhausted from trying to make it work, and close to giving up. A book like this didn’t exist then, or at least I couldn’t find it.

Instead, it took me many years to understand what was really happening beneath all the struggle, pain, and blame, and to start making different choices. That led to a completely unexpected but deeply positive shift in our relationship. We’ve now been together for twenty-six years and are happier than ever.
If you’ve been struggling in your relationship for some time, I sincerely hope this book helps you see yourself, your partner, and your dynamic with more gentleness, clarity, and awareness. And I hope it reminds you that no matter how dark or hopeless things may feel right now, change is possible.

I also wrote this book for anyone who wants to deepen or improve their relationships in general. Whether with your partner, parents, children, friends, or coworkers, the insights in this book can be applied to all your relationships.

What makes my book and therapy, different from everything else there already is?

My book and therapy focus on understanding what’s really happening beneath relationship problems and within your own perspective on the relationship. I combine personal experience, psychology, attachment styles, the nervous system, relationship dynamics, and the differences between men and women in an accessible, human, and authentic way. The essence is shifting your focus from blame to where your influence actually lies. That’s often where real change in relationships begins.

SOPHIE ZEESTRATEN (1974) guides women who feel stuck in recurring relationship patterns. Drawing on her many years of professional experience and her own personal experiences, she developed Couples therapy for one. From her practice in The Hague and online, she offers relationship therapy in a one-on-one format. She previously wrote the book All Alone (Moederziel), which was published in 2020 and translated into German.
